Why is learning about emotional intelligence so important in the workplace? Being attuned to your emotions, understanding them and taking the appropriate action, can increase success in all areas of life, in particular, job performance. Emotional intelligence is increasingly relevant to developing people, and to organizations as a whole because it can provide a new way to understand and assess people’s behaviours, leadership styles, attitudes, social skills, and their potential.
Benefits of Emotional Intelligence in the Workplace
The benefits to you and your company are many. It will help you:
- Create greater self-awareness
- Develop your communication and interpersonal skills
- Become a better leader
- Reach better and more objective decisions
- Manage your stress and cope with life’s daily challenges
- Make your professional and personal life easier, more efficient, more effective and more fun!
Strong leaders use their emotional intelligence to increase their personal and interpersonal effectiveness. Emotional Intelligence is the magnetic attraction that captures everyone’s attention and moves teams forward. Communicators and motivators are the drivers that take teams to the next level, and your leaders must have these soft skills to successfully elevate your business.
Emotional intelligence should be a primary focus for all professionals. People with high EQ scores are more aware of themselves, better able to regulate their actions, and have more empathy for others. An increased level of emotional intelligence can also help employees manage stress better, build healthier relationships, be more effective at work, and more fulfilled in general. Senior people typically possess superior technical abilities; however, they often lack the skills necessary to get the best from their teams. Therefore, it is extremely important to focus on the skills of working with others to increase the effectiveness of organizations.
Leadership is about inspiring, motivating, and igniting passion in others. This helps to attract and retain top talent, in addition to increasing productivity. Effective leadership can be practiced by all team members and is easily seen in the emotions of the employees within an organization. So, how do we teach people to inspire, motivate, and ignite passion? This is done by developing the skills of leading with emotional intelligence. Check out my latest Carolyn Talks in which I share why emotional intelligence is so critical in the workplace.

Hey there. It’s Carolyn Stern, the creator of the 6-part mini-class video series Get Unstuck and Empowered with Emotional Intelligence and the full program, Leading with Emotional Intelligence – A Guide for Professionals That Want to Get Unstuck. The whole premise is that the higher your emotional intelligence, the higher your emotional and social functioning, the higher your well-being and happiness…. the better equipped you are at getting yourself unstuck, maximizing your potential and achieving more.
So, do you want to be inspired into action, to become a better performer, a more effective leader, and an overall happier person in business and in all aspects of your life? If you do, you’ve come to the right place. I will show you ways to get unstuck. I will provide the tools and directions to empower you to have the determination and courage to get out of your own way and become your most authentic self. Like many of you, my school teachers taught me that being inquisitive, working hard, and getting good grades would make me successful. By following this advice, I became a conscientious student, studied hard and got on the honour roll year after year.
After high school, I continued my studies completing as many post-baccalaureate diplomas and degrees as I could to build up my resume. And I’m very proud of my scholastic achievements; I recognize their contribution to my success. But, having said that, when faced with life’s personal and professional challenges, I do not rely on what I learned in the classroom. Instead, I find myself drawing from my own personal development – my emotional understanding of others, the environment, and myself.
So, why didn’t my instructors prepare me how to manage emotional conflicts, while preparing me for a career in business? Why didn’t they teach me how to handle stress? Why didn’t they teach me to manage my personal responses to change and to become more resilient to life’s challenges? Why didn’t they teach me to love who I was, and speak my mind when I needed to? You see, most of these life skills are not taught in school or the workplace, for that matter.
However, we all know these skills are essential to success and self-fulfillment. People need to gain a deeper understanding of themselves and what is important to them in order to live the life they have always wanted and to become the best version of themselves.
So, are we all stuck learning this emotional and personal development education exclusively through the trials and tribulations of the School of Life? Not anymore. If you subscribe to my monthly updates, tune into my videos and follow me on social media, I will uncover simple, practical techniques and exercises that will enhance your emotional intelligence skills and help you become a better performer, a more effective leader, and an overall happier person in business and in all aspects of your life. Sounds too good to be true, right?
Well, it’s not…but, this is not some instant miracle cure either. It is going to take work and commitment from you. It is not going to be easy, and it will require regular work and the development of routines. You are building and strengthening your emotional muscles, just like you build your body’s physical muscles at the gym. When my personal fitness trainer tells me to do another set of curls to build stronger biceps or to complete another 20 dreaded crunches to tighten up my core so that I can have that washboard stomach, I do the work. Is it easy? Heck, no. But if I invest my time and energy and commit to doing the exercises consistently and properly, my body becomes stronger. So, think of me as your personal emotional intelligence trainer — the only way to strengthen your emotional muscles is to “work” them.
Just like strengthening your muscles, the only way you can build these competencies is if you practice “working” them. If you want stronger muscles, you do more weight training exercises. Well, in a sense, if you want stronger emotional muscles, you do the exercises you need to in order to improve them. Will the work be challenging? Sure! Anything worth your time is. Now, I am not promising your life will be perfect, and/or that you will no longer have any conflicts or problems.
Let’s get real. But, you will learn the skills that can lead to a happier, more fulfilling life. Just like I did. At this point in my life, I have never been happier. My life is far from perfect, but I am content and joyful. That is what emotional intelligence did for me. And it is my passion to share this emotional education with as many people as I can. So Get Unstuck and Empowered with Emotional Intelligence.

Emotional Intelligence isn’t one of those things that you either have or you don’t. Just as with IQ, we have an EQ (Emotional Quotient), and just as with IQ, it’s not set in stone. The good news is that emotional intelligence can be learned, developed, and enhanced. Give us a call to find out how.
